A New Herbal, or History of Plants

Creator

Rembert Dodoens

Description

William Corbett left Robert Wolfe 'one great herbal' in his will. A herbal is a collection of descriptions of plants and their properties, particularly their medicinal properties, so would have been a useful household item.

A New Herbal is a translation of Rembert Dodoens' Cruydeboeck, which was originally in Dutch, translated into English via French by Henry Lyre. The book details 'the kinds', 'the description', 'the place', 'the time', 'the names', 'the nature', 'the virtues' and 'the danger' of a wide range of plants. The copy pictured is from the St Nicholas Cathedral Library, now held by Newcastle City Library.
